Just curious if anyone is still out there. If so, those of You who live
up north there. ;-) I was wondering what You thought of all these new
shows on Television about Alaska, The Yukon etc. Having never been up
there, I find them interesting and fascinating.

    Have a good One!

yeah... no... not us over here O:)

i used to watch a few of them quite a bit but then between seasons when they repeat the episodes, i lost interest and never looked back... i'd rather watch old episodes of Dr.Who, Top Gear, How do they do it?, and similar with numerous
forays to the military channel for some of their informational shows over there...

Deadliest Catch was good until Captain Phil died... i just can't get into it any more and it was getting rather boring before then, too...

Ice Road Truckers was also interesting but the first season or two had two drivers that i just got to where i couldn't stand them... they moved on to other areas and the show got better... then a couple of female drivers joined in and the show was a bit more decent to watch... but like the others, between seasons, they just get boring and loose the attention...

i've watched the flying show(s) a couple of times... they were alright for what
    they were...

I guess that is where I am a bit lucky Mark, although there have been some
new ones too, with new seasons. My current favorites are Yukon Men, and One that I have seen repeats, but season ended last week, Alaska the final Frontier. Both good shows in my book. My current favorite is Life Below Zero. They have several families living in different non cities quite a way above the arctic circle. I just find it amazing that they can survive sometime.
they have great skills. They also live in some of the most beautiful country. There is one called Mountain Men also.. Only one guy lives up there, but he
is something else. He looks like a hillbilly idiot, but that guy is amazing. He is like MacGuyver. Can fix just about anything, with nothing. ;-)
Then there is wild west Alaska which is pretty idiotic, But the young lass named Phred makes it worth watching :-) She probably sells more guns than
most of the other staff put together.

they do it?, and similar with numerous forays to the military channel

Love the military channel, and I am a history fan also, so the history channels are pretty good. But like You said above, a lot of repeats. But even some of their dramas have been good. I liked the Vikings mini series and look forward to that coming back.

Yes I have lived here my whole life. It isn't large about 110,000 people, most people I grew up with couldn't wait to get out but I love it here. The outdoors is beautiful and there are so many wonderful lakes in the area. Big enough to hide in but small enough to know how to find someone if needed. :)
Summer is taking it's time to come as we had a very cool and wet spring.

I'll bet it is Beautiful.. Sadly for me, I have never been farther North than Quebec.. Luckily down here in NY we have had a nice spring. Jus starting to get the warm Humid weather this weekend. Last year was bizarre, we were getting 80's in February and not just flier days. The come end of may, A
frost and it killed al lot of the Fruit crop. But we thought the early warm spring was great up until then ;)

My wife and I used to live in Alaska. I have always wanted to move back but
my employer (a county government) never saw a reason to ope a branch office there :-)
In general, most of the writings, movies, and TV are somewhat based on
fact. However, "artistic license" is often overused. Despite a few qualms,
my wife moved there just after we were married. I think her qualms were allayed when we drove into Anchorage and she saw seven story parking
    structures and numerous traffic lights.
Alaska is a huge area. imagine being asked to describe life in the lower 48 states. Culture and climate would vary dramatically between Raleigh NC, International Falls, Minn, and Sand Diego CA. So to is Alaska.

As you can see, traffic has slowed to an extreme crawl here.
There was a time when you might see almost a hundred messages in a day.
Of course, there was also a time when chipping arrowhead for the tribe was important.

I hear Ya.. In most cases for me when I see these shows, I am obviously impressed by it's beauty. I also find that in many of the shows about
rural areas, I am impressed with the commraderie amongst the home town folks and the willingness to work together etc. It looks like a hard
    life, but a healthy one.
As for cities, I will count on Your assessment, sounds like
they are just like the thousands of other cities across the world.
I still say I would love to live up there, if I could afford it.
