ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. - Amtrak has announced it has suspended
    one of its major services.

Effective, Friday, September 30, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner
trains will no longer operate between Irvine and San Diego.
According to Amtrak, the service suspension stems from safety
    concerns in San Clemente.

Amtrak said it is working with transportation partners to see if
there are bus connections to and from Irvine and Oceanside.
Amtrak said it will make announcements as soon as there are
    updates to the service.

The service suspension is indefinite, and it will resume service
once the repairs are done, Amtrak said.

"We understand that closures will result in
    disruptionsaandasincerely apologize for anyainconveniences it
causes our riders. WeAll continue to look for ways to minimize
the impact of these closures as this critical work continues,"
Amtrak said in a statement online.

Well, we have the What and When....how about the *Why*?

What is the nature of the "safety concerns" in San Clemente.

I am reminded of the AMTRAK trip I took from Salinas,CA to Longview, WA.

At the Chico, CA stop I was surprised to see a policeman loitering on the platform. I chatted him up and learned that there had been a problem w/
Chico citizens/students/denizens rushing the train(s) when they stopped and vandalizing things, throwing luggage out the doors etcetera.

I was shocked...not the United States *I* grew up in.

I wonder if the San Clemente concerns are similar.

The track is falling into the ocean. They need to build more
    protection along the shore.
