Turmeric is the root of the East Indian curcuma longa plant, dried and powdered. According to studies done at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, cur cumin, the anti-oxidant in turmeric will slow or stop tumor growth. UCLA studies seem to show that turmeric also clears amyloid beta plaques out of the brain of Alzheimer's suffers. Turmeric also fights inflammation in the body. Recommended amounts of turmeric are one to two teaspoons a day. Turmeric is one of the main ingredients for curry (you can make your own curry, instructions are listed below, or buy commercial curry powder) and goes well with chicken, pork, turkey, potatoes, rice and other
    such foods.

If you want to make your own curry powder, there is no set rule as how it is made. Many countries that use curry powders (which were developed by the Crusaders to cover the taste of rotting meat) have their own local favorites and they vary considerably.

To make a mild, "American" style curry at home, you will need: 4 Tbsps. of ground coriander, 2 Tbsps. of black pepper, 1 Tsp. of ground cloves, 6 Tbsps. of ground turmeric, 2 Tsps. of ground cinnamon, 1 Tsp. of ground ginger, 1/2 Tsp. of cayenne pepper, Salt to taste after cooking.

Combine all ingredients in a cast iron skillet. Stirring constantly, cook
over a medium heat until the powder begins to brown and is starting to get fragrant, which should be about four minutes. Remove from the heat, let it
cool and store in an air tight container. Most dishes will need about one to two tablespoons of curry and of course garlic always goes well with curry.
