I was just wondering if anyone has used a solar oven...

My wife and I have the "Sun Oven" solar oven which we like a lot.

My wife put up a blog post about making hard boiled eggs in the oven.

    http://thehomesteadinghippy.com/hard-cook-eggs-solar-oven/

We have also cooked whole chickens, baked bread, soup and a lot of other things. The really cool part about our sun oven is that it never burns the food. The temperature is usually lower than a traditional oven but you just leave it out longer and it does the same thing... except no burning.

So, it is more like a slow-cooker, then an oven. :)

I just love the idea of using a sun oven. I'll probably make a simple one to try out a few time. Once I know it's something we'll use on a regular basis, I'll look at purchasing one.

    Thanks for the input.

it depends on a number of factors.

You mentioned temperatures, does it really get as high as the advertised temperature (360-400 degrees F)?

It does sound like a slow cooker but that's certainly not a bad thing. I
    love my slow cooker.

    Thanks,
    Dean.

That's pretty cool. How long would it take to cool a whole chicken? I guess it depends on a number of factors.

Slow cookers are great! My wife and I love ours.

I'll have to do some research on solar ovens. Sounds like something I'd like to try :)

Yeah, they are fun - also during the summer it helps keep the kitchen cooler.

Take a look at the file selection on fluph BBS. He has a huge list of informational files on solar ovens. I haven't had a chance to go through them all yet, but some of the give instructions on building your own.

    Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone has used a solar oven...

I met someone awhile back, who built their own, and use it on a daily basis. They are working on getting completely off the grid. (solar panels, well
water, etc) The only thing left for them to do, is find a way to heat their house in the winter without having to use gas.

I have not but have seen them in action.

In-home heating can be done with kerosene. I use a kero heater when it gets really cold here...which isn't that often.

    Thanks!

I think it would be great to make one to try it out. Living in New Mexico, we probably have 350 sunny days per year. :)

Last I heard from them, they were using propane for heating. They didn't like having to depend on someone to refill their tank though. I believe they were looking to get a wood burning stove, in hopes of replacing the need for propane.
