Sage, the garden variety anyway, is a favorite of mine. Used for centuries as
a spring tonic and put in wine to be drank in the winter (called "sage wine") to prevent various ailments, it has a long history. According to the journal
of Clinical Pharmacology, sage has antibiotic, antifungal and antispasmodic properties. It is also useful for managing Alzheimer's. Sage goes well with most meats, stews, potatoes and rice. Traditionally sage is used in dressing for turkey in the U.S.
